What is Budokon M.M.A?
Budokon (BDK) M.M.A is the renowned Mixed Movement Arts system which integrates 5 key movement modalities, namely; Martial Arts, Yoga, Mobility, Calisthenics, and Animal Locomotion.
Budokon was created in 2001 by founder, Cameron Shayne - considered the father of Mixed Movement Arts.
Budokon Mixed Martial Arts
Not to be confused with the all-encompassing Budokon Mixed Movement Arts system of which Martial Arts is just one aspect. The Budokon Mixed Martial Arts training consists of both upright self-defence arts or "stand up fighting" and self-defence from/on the ground or "ground fighting" arts.
BDK is taught as a "non-classical" style, suggesting that it is built from traditional martial arts but without attachment to any specific style. As such, it is fair to say that Budokon is a Hybrid Mixed Martial Arts system, drawing from several styles of Martial Arts.
Unlike more traditional martial arts, Budokon has no fixed striking style, and is focused on practical self-defence application.
As well as being a combat system, it is also a philosophy with guiding universal principles, specifically that all mental activity (beliefs, thoughts, consciousness) is subjective, and temporary.
Standing Arts
The primary traditions that founded the Budokon standing martial arts (striking), and self-defence curriculum, are Japanese Karate-Do and Korean Taekwondo. Secondary systems include: Boxing, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai.
Ground Fighting/ Grappling
The primary traditions that founded the Budokon ground fighting arts and self-defence curriculum are: Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Our grappling style is from the prestigious lineage of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Budokon founder, Cameron Shayne began his BJJ journey in 2003 under the legendary Rickson Gracie. In 2015 he received his brown belt from Ryan Gracie's direct lineage holder, 4th degree black belt and world champion - Professor Gui Arashiro. Fast forward to 2021, and in collaboration with Cameron Shayne, both Alexandre “Xande” Ribeiro (Six Blades), and Raphael Lavato Jr. (Lovato BJJ) have been great contributors to our BJJ system development, and particularly the new “Mobility for BJJ” curriculum.
The Budokon Grappling style is focused on the classic Gracie self-defence approach of the smaller person defeating a larger appointment.
Here at BDK London, we have a perfect blend of men and women training together in a safe, controlled and inspiring space. We train in both traditional “Gi” and modern “No Gi” Grappling.
